The East Isles neighborhood, named after the Lake that encompasses the neighborhoods entire western border, is a smaller quiet residential neighborhood with access to an abundance of recreational activities yet within walking distance to numerous cultural, dining and shopping attractions. The neighborhood is bound by Lake of the Isles Parkway to the west, 22nd Street to the North, Hennepin Avenue to the east and Lake Street to the south.
East Isles is a mixture of stately homes along Lake of the Isles, large single-family homes built in the early part of the 20th century and several multi-family apartment buildings scattered throughout.
The uptown area is situated in the southern portion of the neighborhood. This unique and trendy area has long been a popular destination for neighborhood residents, suburbanites and tourists and is well known for shopping, dining, entertainment and leisure. The pedestrian atmosphere and the abundant specialty boutique stores and services have made the Uptown area an attractive location to live and play. The recreational highlight of the neighborhood is the 109-acre Lake of the Isles, which also connects to the larger and busier Lake Calhoun to the south and the serene Cedar Lake to the north. Lake of the Isles is surrounded by walking and cycling paths and features an abundance of open green space throughout. There is a popular 3.6-acre off-leash dog park on the south end of the lake and during the winter months, the large part of the northern portion of the lake is transformed in a skating and hockey rink.
Along the southern portion of the lake is the 5.7 mile Midtown Greenway a popular and virtually traffic-free route across the city for cyclists, inline skaters, runners and pedestrians. Additionally, there are a couple of smaller triangular shaped parks in the neighborhood, Levin Triangle and Smith Triangle that feature playgrounds that are popular amongst the numerous families that live in East Isles.
