The Hiawatha neighborhood, named after the early 19th century poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous, The Song of Hiawatha, is a quiet and conveniently located neighborhood with an abundance of green space and recreational activities. This southeast Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by 40th Street to the north, West River Parkway and the Mississippi River on the east, 54th Street to the south and Hiawatha Avenue to the west

Approximately 1/3 of the neighborhood is parkland and includes the very popular Minnehaha Park, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and Hiawatha Park, a smaller neighborhood park located in the center of Hiawatha.

Situated in the southern portion of the Hiawatha neighborhood and along the banks of the Mississippi River, Minnehaha Park is one of the most well known and visited parks in Minneapolis. The 193-acre park is highlighted by the picturesque Minnehaha Falls and features several amenities including miles of walking paths, biking trails, large covered picnic areas, wading pools, playgrounds, disc golf course, volleyball courts, concessions and the Sea Salt Eatery, a casual and acclaimed seafood restaurant. Minnehaha Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and also features the historically significant Longfellow House and the John H Stevens House, the first wood frame dwelling built west of the Mississippi River. Additionally, the local neighborhood dogs enjoy the nearby 4.3-acre off-leash dog park which straddles the shores of the Mississippi River and is the largest such dog area in Minneapolis.

West River Parkway, which follows the Mississippi River on the eastern edge of the neighborhood, is a scenic drive and also features miles of walking and bike paths, with several tennis courts located along the way. This winding and scenic parkway, which begins in Minnehaha Park, traverses north to downtown Minneapolis and is part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway that directly links the Hiawatha neighborhood to miles of paths, trails and parks throughout the city of Minneapolis.

The conveniently located Hiawatha Park is a popular neighborhood park that features picnic areas, baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground, wading pool and community center.

While nearly all residential, the Hiawatha Avenue corridor along the western edge of the neighborhood features some industrial facilities along with several retail and commercial oriented businesses that cater to local residents. Here residents will find casual dining options, a Walgreens Pharmacy, Pet Store, Dry Cleaning/Laundromat and various other smaller independent businesses. Additionally, the Minneapolis Light Rail Transit line runs along Hiawatha and is accessible by three nearby stations in the neighborhood, taking residents north to downtown Minneapolis or south to the Mall of America and Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport.

There are few renters in the neighborhood, with owner occupied homes making up 76% percent of all households in Hiawatha, with the remaining 24% of households classified as renters. Average median household income is $43,912 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $47,135.
