The Howe neighborhood, named after Julia Ward Howe, the author of the patriotic “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, is a quiet residential neighborhood centrally located along the banks of the Mississippi. This southeast Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by 34th Street on the north, West River Parkway and the Mississippi River to the east, 40th Street to the south and Hiawatha Avenue to the West.
West River Parkway, which follows the Mississippi River on the eastern edge of the neighborhood, is a scenic drive and also features miles of walking and bike paths, with several tennis courts located along the way. This winding and scenic parkway, which begins in Minnehaha Park, traverses north to downtown Minneapolis and is part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway that directly links the Hiawatha neighborhood to miles of paths, trails and parks throughout the city of Minneapolis.
Just a few minutes south of the Howe neighborhood and along the banks of the Mississippi River, is Minnehaha Park, one of the most well known and visited parks in Minneapolis. The 193-acre park is highlighted by the picturesque Minnehaha Falls and features several amenities including miles of walking paths, biking trails, large covered picnic areas, wading pools, playgrounds, disc golf course, volleyball courts, concessions and the Sea Salt Eatery, a casual and acclaimed seafood restaurant.
Longfellow Park is a popular neighborhood park located in the northern section of Howe that features an indoor recreation center, baseball, softball and soccer fields, basketball court and a playground and wading pool for the younger residents in the neighborhood. During the winter months a large ice rink is installed for ice skating and hockey games.
The Howe neighborhood is diverse with a good mixture of working professionals, empty nesters and families, many of whom send their children to the four schools in the Howe neighborhood: Sanford Middle School, Howe School, Minnehaha Academy and Dowling Elementary School.

There is also a smaller retail corner in Howe at the intersection of 38th Street and 42nd Street. This charming and centrally located commercial district features a retro movie theater, antique store, a garden and landscaping store, new neighborhood health clinic, coffee shop and wine bar. There are a couple of other small coffee shops and businesses scattered throughout the neighborhood as well.
There are few renters in the neighborhood, with owner occupied homes making up 80% percent of all households in Howe, with the remaining 20% of households classified as renters.
