The Midtown Phillips neighborhood, originally named after Wendell Phillips, a well known 19th century abolitionist, is one of the oldest areas in the city and is a vibrant neighborhood with a mix of residential, commercial and industrial uses. This south Minneapolis neighborhood located only minutes from downtown Minneapolis is bound by Chicago Avenue to the west, 24th Street to the north, Bloomington Avenue to the east and Lake Street to the south.
Midtown Phillips is one the newest neighborhood in Minneapolis, subdivided in 2005 after previously being part of the larger Phillips neighborhood. The neighborhood is culturally diverse and consists of mainly multi-family buildings with older single-family homes scattered throughout. The neighborhood is also home to one of the larger employers in Minneapolis, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, which takes up a good portion of the western part of the Midtown Phillips neighborhood. Additionally, due to the presence of a major hospital in the neighborhood, there are numerous ancillary medical related clinics and buildings scattered throughout Midtown Phillips.
Along the Lake Street commercial corridor on the southern boundary of the neighborhood, residents will find casual dining options, several ethnic restaurants, bank branches, markets, and various other service-oriented businesses that cater to local residents. There are additional smaller commercial areas along Bloomington and Chicago Avenues that offer an alternative to the busier Lake Street corridor.
The neighborhood also features two popular markets. Located in the southwest corner is The Midtown Global Market, an internationally-themed public market featuring fresh and prepared foods, several restaurants, and a wide choice of arts and crafts from around the world. The southeast corner of the neighborhood features Mercado Central, a popular Latin American marketplace that features food, apparel, arts and crafts and other vendors. Outside of the neighborhood and further west or east along Lake Street, residents of Midtown Phillips will find a plethora of additional dining, entertainment and shopping options.
The popular Stewart Park is conveniently located in the center of the neighborhood and features baseball, softball and soccer fields, plenty of green space to have a picnic and a playground and wading pool for the younger residents in the neighborhood. Additionally, the 5.7 mile Midtown Greenway traverses the southern portion of the neighborhood just North of Lake Street and is used as a virtually traffic-free route across the city for cyclists, inline skaters, runners and pedestrians.
Located two blocks south of Midtown Phillips is the picturesque Powderhorn Park. This 68-acre park is one of the largest neighborhood parks in Minneapolis and features numerous recreational amenities surrounding a beautiful 12-acre lake. The park has numerous amenities including, several athletic fields, fishing dock, bandstand, tennis and volleyball courts, walking paths, gardens and a large playground and wading pool.
The neighborhood contains few home owners, with owner occupied homes making up only 25% percent of all households in Midtown Phillips, with the remaining 75% of households classified as renters. Average median household income is $28,539 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $37,974.
