The Harrison neighborhood, named after William Henry Harrison, the 9th President of the United States, is a conveniently located neighborhood located just minutes west of Downtown Minneapolis. This west Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Theodore Wirth Park on the west, Olson Memorial Highway (MN HWY 55) and Glenwood Avenue to the north, Girard Terrace and Interstate 94 to the east, and Bassett’s Creek and the Cedar Lake Trail to the south.
Harrison is a diverse neighborhood with the eastern third of the neighborhood consisting of industrial buildings and the remainder of the neighborhood characterized by single-family homes, small multi-family apartment buildings, and plenty of parkland and green space.
Bassett's Creek Valley Park, which is named for the creek that runs through the park, is along the western and southwestern border of the neighborhood. This popular 70-acre park features tennis and volleyball courts, baseball, softball and soccer fields, playground and plenty of green space for a picnic. There is also a commuter biking trail that runs through the park, the Luce Line Trail, which connects to nearby Bryn Mawr Park, Theodore Wirth Park and the Cedar Lake Trail, known as America’s first “Bike Freeway” that connects to downtown Minneapolis a few minutes east and other bike trails throughout Hennepin County.
Adjacent to Bassett’s Creek Park on the west is the 742-acre Theodore Wirth Park, the largest regional park in the Minneapolis Park System and home to Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden, miles of skiing and hiking trails, a snowboard park, 18-hole golf course and swimming beach.
The neighborhood is also home to Harrison Park, conveniently located is located on Irving Avenue next to the Harrison Education Center and Harrison Neighborhood Association. This popular 7-acre park features baseball, softball and soccer fields, walking and biking paths, picnic areas, basketball courts, indoor recreation center with gymnasium, and a playground and wading pool for neighborhood children
There is no major commercial corridor in the neighborhood and the few small businesses that are in the neighborhood are primarily located along Glenwood Avenue. The western end of Harrison is home to International Market Square, a Minneapolis landmark that is home to several interior design showrooms, architect studios, galleries and residential lofts. A block east, is the Minneapolis Farmers Market, the largest open air market in the region and home to over 230 vendors offering fresh produce, meats, dairy, flowers and various other locally grown foods.
