The Hawthorne neighborhood, named after the famous 19th century American novelist, Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a diverse neighborhood located just minutes from downtown Minneapolis and next to the West Broadway Avenue commercial corridor. This north Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Emerson Avenue to the west, Lowry Avenue to the north, the Mississippi River to the east and West Broadway Avenue to the south.
Interstate 94 bisects the neighborhood and the eastern portion of Hawthorne along the Mississippi River is all commercial and industrial. The area of Hawthorne to the west of Interstate 94 is nearly all residential, with the exception of the two commercial corridors on the neighborhood boundaries. Portions of the neighborhood are undergoing re-development and the city is also considering a long range plan to transition the area of Hawthorne along the Mississippi River into residential and parkland uses
