The Jordan neighborhood, named in 1922 after Charles Morison Jordan, Superintendent Emeritus of the Minneapolis Public School System is a quiet and mainly residential neighborhood that features an abundance of green space and is located in close proximity to downtown Minneapolis as well as to the West Broadway Avenue commercial corridor. This north Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by West Broadway Avenue to the west and south, Lowry Avenue to the north and Emerson Avenue to the east.
The major commercial and shopping area for the neighborhood is located at the southern border along West Broadway. This thriving corridors features retail shops, a Cub Foods grocery store, CVS Pharmacy, bank branches, gas/convenience stores, salons, neighborhood taverns, entertainment, several dining options and numerous other service oriented businesses that cater to local residents.
Lowry Avenue, on the northern border of the neighborhood, is another commercial corridor that features additional casual dining options, ethnic restaurants, hardware store, health clinics, post office, library and a few gas/convenience stores. Additionally, downtown Minneapolis is located a few minutes southeast of the neighborhood and as the commercial, social, and cultural pulse for the entire region, this vibrant area features numerous cultural attractions, entertainment options, shopping, theaters, hotels and numerous additional dining choices.
There are several acres of parkland and green space within the Jordan neighborhood including five city parks. At the northwest corner of the neighborhood is the 742-acre Theodore Wirth Park, the largest regional park in the Minneapolis Park System and home to Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden, miles of skiing and hiking trails, a snowboard park, 18-hole golf course and swimming beach.
The main park within the neighborhood is Jordan Park, located along James Avenue. The park is adjacent to Jordan Park Elementary School (grades K-8) and features picnic areas, horseshoe pits, baseball and softball fields, and a playground and wading pool. The park was recently renovated in 2007 to include new playground equipment and several newly planted trees throughout the park.
Located in the southern section of the neighborhood are four additional smaller parks. Glen Gale Park, Newton Triangle, Irving Triangle and Cottage Park are all popular residential parks that offer green space, playgrounds and plenty of space for a picnic.
Additionally, one block south of the neighborhood is the larger North Commons Park, which features several athletic fields, walking and bike paths, concessions, picnic areas and plenty of green space to just relax and enjoy the scenery. This park is popular with neighborhood children due to the playground, wading pool and adjacent water park, one of only two such water parks in the city.
The neighborhood is a good mix between renters and homeowners, with owner occupied homes making up 60% percent of all households in Jordan with the remaining 40% of households classified as renters. Average median household income is $31,318 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $37,974.
