The Near North is a sprawling and diverse neighborhood located just northwest of downtown Minneapolis. This north Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Penn, Knox, James and Irving Avenues to the west, West Broadway to the north, West River Road and the Mississippi River to the east and Plymouth, 11th and 7th Avenues to the south.
Near north is a diverse neighborhood that consists of industrial, commercial and residential uses, with several city parks scattered throughout. The eastern section of near north along the Mississippi River is entirely industrial as well as portions of the neighborhood along Plymouth Avenue. The residential sections of the neighborhood feature smaller multi-family apartment buildings, duplexes and single-family homes, many of which are unique Victorian-style homes from the early 20th century.
The major commercial and shopping area for the neighborhood is located at the northern border along West Broadway. This thriving corridors features retail shops, a Cub Foods grocery store, CVS Pharmacy, bank branches, gas/convenience stores, salons, neighborhood taverns, entertainment, several dining options and numerous other service oriented businesses that cater to local residents. North Commons Park, located in the northeastern portion of the neighborhood, is a large park that features several athletic fields, walking and bike paths, concessions, picnic areas and plenty of green space to just relax and enjoy the scenery. This park is popular with neighborhood children due to the playground, wading pool and adjacent water park, one of only two such water parks in the city.

The larger 12-acre Bethune Park is located in the southern portion of the neighborhood, adjacent to Bethune Elementary School.
