The Ericsson neighborhood, named after John Ericsson, a Swedish engineer and inventor who designed and built the U.S.S. Monitor for the United States Navy during the Civil War, is a vibrant but quiet residential neighborhood with numerous recreational activities an dan abundance of green space. This south Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by Cedar Avenue on the west, 42nd and 43rd Streets to the north, Hiawatha Avenue to the east, and Minnehaha Parkway to the south.
Most homes in the neighborhood are older single-family homes with newer multi-family buildings being built along the Hiawatha corridor due to the emergence of the Minneapolis Light Rail Transit system, which has a station in the neighborhood at 46th Street taking residents north to downtown Minneapolis or south to the Mall of America and Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport.
The majority of the neighborhood is green space and is centered on Lake Hiawatha Park, which is connected to Minnehaha Creek. Lake Hiawatha Park features mature trees, wide-open spaces and a beautiful 52-acre lake. The park covers 241 acres and features a large playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, swimming beach, baseball, softball and soccer fields and the Hiawatha Golf Course. This popular 18-hole golf course was named “Best Golf Course” by City Pages in 2004 and 2008 and features mature trees and amazing views of nearby Lake Nokomis and downtown Minneapolis to the north.
Minnehaha Creek Park and Minnehaha Parkway, follows Minnehaha Creek and is popular among Ericsson residents for wide open spaces, biking, walking and jogging. The parkway is part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway that directly links the Minnehaha neighborhood to miles of paths, trails and parks throughout the city of Minneapolis. Just south of the neighborhood is beautiful Lake Nokomis, which offers an abundance of additional recreational activities including swimming beaches, miles of walking and biking trails, playgrounds, concessions, fishing docks and several baseball, softball and football fields.
Residents are in close proximity to a few commercial areas that are located primarily on the neighborhoods boundaries. The intersection of 47th Street and Cedar Avenue features a grocery store, pizzeria, wine store, gas and convenience store, coffee shop and a popular ice cream parlor. At 42nd Street and 28th Avenue in the northeastern corner of the neighborhood, residents of Ericsson will find a charming retail area that features the Angry Catfish Bicycle and Coffee bar, a bakery, sporting goods store, Chinese restaurant, a grocery store and a neighborhood tavern. Along the eastern border of the neighborhood, the Hiawatha Avenue corridor features several commercial, retail and entertainment options.
Several children in the neighborhood attend the popular, Northrop Elementary School, which is located in the northeast section of the neighborhood and serves grades K-5.
There are very few renters in the neighborhood, with owner occupied homes making up 87% percent of all households in Field, with the remaining 13% of households classified as renters.
