The Field neighborhood, named after Eugene Field, a popular 19th century American writer known for his children’s poetry and humorous essays, is a quiet and conveniently located residential neighborhood in south Minneapolis. The neighborhood is bound by Interstate 35W on the west, 46th Street to the north, Chicago Avenue to the east and Minnehaha Parkway on the south.
The nearly all residential neighborhood is characterized by smaller mostly two-bedrooms homes built in the 1920’s and 30’s. Chicago Avenue, on the eastern edge of the neighborhood, is the main commercial corridor and features a variety of quaint restaurants, boutiques and specialty stores. At 48th Street and Chicago, residents will find a charming and trendy area that features the popular restaurants Pepitos and Café Levain, along with a neighborhood tavern, the Turtle Bread Company, Sovereign Grounds Coffee Shop, True Colors Bookstore, a Chinese restaurant, a movie theater and veterinary clinic. North of this intersection along Chicago Avenue is a grocery store, Walgreens Pharmacy, local bank branches, a pizza café and a health clinic.
Minnehaha Parkway, which follows Minnehaha Creek for 12 miles from Lake Harriet to the west and Minnehaha Park to the east, is the main recreational amenity in the neighborhood and popular among Field residents for biking, walking and jogging. The parkway is part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway that directly links the Field neighborhood to miles of paths, trails and parks throughout the city of Minneapolis. Just south of the neighborhood on Portland Avenue is the 29-acre Pearl Park, named for Pearl Lake which once occupied the site but was later in-filled and turned into a park during the 1930’s. The park also contains a large recreation center with meeting rooms and a gym used for indoor volleyball and basketball.
