Nearby Minnehaha Park, on the east side of Hiawatha Avenue, is one of the oldest and most visited parks in Minneapolis. Along the shores of the Mississippi River, Minnehaha Park features untold natural attractions, including a 53-foot waterfall, popularized by the poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in the mid-19th century. The 193-acre park also includes miles of trails, pavilions, concessions, reservable picnic areas, disc golf course, wading pool, volleyball courts, and bike rental. Additionally, the neighborhood dogs enjoy the nearby 4.3-acre off-leash dog park straddling the shores of the Mississippi that happens to be the largest dog park facility in Minneapolis.
Primarily residential, with a diverse mixture of single family homes and some multi-family buildings scattered throughout, Minnehaha residents enjoy shopping and entertainment options in the northwest corner of the neighborhood as the intersection of 34th Avenue and 50th Street features banks, restaurants, a grocery store, bowling alley, auto repair, dry cleaning and other smaller businesses. Owner occupied homes make up 87% percent of total households in the Minnehaha neighborhood and the average median household income remained slightly higher at $45,380 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $37,974.
Residents of Minnehaha appreciate that they are within walking distance to the Hiawatha Line, the main and currently only route of the Minneapolis light rail transit system. The Hiawatha line, which will eventually connect to future light rail lines that will travel throughout the Twin Cities, carries passengers north into downtown Minneapolis and south to the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport and the famous Mall of America in Bloomington. Additionally, easy access in and out of the neighborhood via Highway 62/Crosstown and Hiawatha Avenue are an added convenience to local residents.
