The Wenonah neighborhood, named after the mother of Native American leader Hiawatha, is located on the southern edge of Minneapolis situated in between the Diamond Lake and Morris Park neighborhoods and the city of Richfield to the south. The neighborhood is primarily bound by Highway 62/Crosstown to the south, Cedar Avenue and Lake Nokomis to the West, 54th Street to the North and 34th Avenue to the east. Little known beyond of neighborhood residents, there is also small portion of the Wenonah neighborhood (two square blocks) containing approximately 20 single-family homes that extends south past Highway 62/Crosstown into Richfield.
The majority of the existing single-family homes in the neighborhood were built between the 1920's and the 1960s, mainly because of the streetcar routes that used to travel through the neighborhood during that time. Predominantly residential, the intersection of 34th Avenue and 55th Street is the only part of the Wenonah neighborhood with retail and commercial oriented businesses.
