The Beltrami neighborhood, named after Giacomo Constantino Beltrami, a 19th century Italian scholar and explorer, is a small and quiet neighborhood tucked away in northeast Minneapolis. This mostly residential neighborhood conveniently located in close proximity to downtown Minneapolis and nearby commercial corridors, is bound by Central Avenue and Harrison Street to the west, Broadway Street to the north, Interstate 35W to the East and Hennepin Avenue to the south.
The western portion of the neighborhood contains light industrial buildings and the Burlington Northern Railroad, while the reminder of the Beltrami neighborhood is characterized by single-family homes built primarily in the 1930’s and 40’s along with some multi-family apartment buildings. There are no businesses in Beltrami, with the exception of Delmonico’s Italian Foods, a long time neighborhood landmark well known for its authentic Italian foods and laid back atmosphere.
A few blocks southwest of Beltrami is the bustling Hennepin Avenue commercial corridor. In this trendy area, residents will find several longtime and popular Minneapolis landmarks including, Kramarczuk’s eastern European deli, Surdyk’s Wine Store and Deli, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (the oldest church in Minneapolis) and Nye's Polonaise, named “Best Bar in America” by Esquire Magazine in October of 2006. Additionally, there are several historic pubs, charming restaurants, boutique shops and a Lunds grocery store within this area as well.
Additionally, north of the Beltrami neighborhood along Central Avenue, residents will find a thriving shopping area featuring Indian grocery stores, and Middle Eastern and Latin American restaurants and markets. There are several other entertainment options, nightclubs, casual restaurants, shopping and service-oriented businesses that cater to local residents along the Central Avenue corridor as well.
The highlight of the neighborhood is Beltrami Park and recreation center, conveniently located in the center of the neighborhood. This popular neighborhood park features basketball courts, tennis courts, volleyball courts, soccer and softball fields, walking paths and a wading pool and playground for the neighborhood children.
A few blocks north of Beltrami is Northeast Park, which also features several athletic fields, picnic areas, multiple tennis and volleyball courts and plenty of open green space. Adjacent to Northeast Park is the Jim Lupient Water Park. This water park is especially popular with neighborhood children during long summer days and features several water slides, a lap pool, wading pool, interactive fountains and concessions
The neighborhood is located next to Interstate 35W providing residents quick and easy access in and out of Beltrami. Additionally, Central Avenue on the western border takes residents quickly into downtown Minneapolis a few miles south
