The Holland neighborhood, named after Josiah Holland, a 19th century American novelist and poet, is a quiet and diverse residential neighborhood located in close proximity to downtown Minneapolis and unique commercial corridors. This northeast Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by University Avenue to the west, 27th Avenue to the north, Central Avenue to the east and 17th Avenue to the south.
Holland is mostly residential with single-family homes and multi-family apartment’s buildings and is bisected by the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks which are surrounded by light industrial buildings. The streets that make up Holland’s borders are where the majority of the shops, dining options and stores are located, with the exception of a few smaller neighborhood corners that feature businesses such as pubs, bakeries, convenience stores and casual restaurants.
Along Central Avenue, the main commercial and retail area, residents will find a thriving shopping area featuring Indian grocery stores, Middle Eastern and Latin American restaurants and markets. Some notable landmarks along this stretch include Hold Land Deli, Crescent Moon Bakery, East Side Food Coop and several other entertainment options, nightclubs, casual restaurants, shops and service-oriented businesses that cater to local residents.
Further south of the neighborhood on Hennepin Avenue, residents will find several longtime and popular Minneapolis landmarks including, Kramarczuk’s eastern European deli, Surdyk’s Wine Store and, Nye's Polonaise, and several additional historic pubs, charming restaurants, boutique shops and a Lunds grocery store.
Jackson Square is the main neighborhood Park within Holland. This recently renovated and popular park features basketball courts, volleyball courts, baseball fields, picnic areas and a large playground and wading pool for neighborhood children. The park also features gardens and several new recently planted birch trees. The park also features a large spherical sculpture, a connection to the thriving artist community that the neighborhood and northeast Minneapolis is known for. Across the street from Jackson Square is a large open green space that has been converted into another park featuring community gardens and a playground.
Another popular park located just north of the neighborhood is the 180-acre Columbia Park. This park features rolling terrain and plenty of wide open green spaces in addition to the walking paths, picnic areas, athletic fields, playground, off-leash dog run and the adjacent 18-hole Columbia Golf Club.
Also located in the neighborhood across from Edison High School, the main high school for northeast Minneapolis is the Bill & Bonnie Daniels Firefighter Museum, a popular cultural attracting and the only museum in the Twin Cities dedicated to the firefighting profession.
The neighborhood is a good mix between home owners and renters, with owner occupied homes making up 51% percent of all households in Holland with the remaining 49% of households classified as renters.
