The Sheridan neighborhood, named after Civil War General Philip Sheridan, is a quiet mostly residential neighborhood located minutes from downtown Minneapolis. This northeast Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by the Mississippi River to the west, 18th and 17th Avenues to the north, Washington Street to the east and Broadway Street to the south.
Sheridan is a historic and diverse neighborhood characterized by light industrial buildings along the Mississippi River in the western portion of the neighborhood and older single-family homes and smaller multi-family apartment buildings throughout the rest of the neighborhood. Because a large portion of the neighborhood was originally built for industrial uses, there are also several older architecturally unique buildings throughout Sheridan that have been converted into commercial and residential uses, such as the Grain Belt Brewery complex, which has been converted into lofts and art studios and galleries.
As with similar neighborhood in northeast Minneapolis, Sheridan is home to several artist’s and galleries many of them located along 13th Avenue, a cozy corridor informally known as “Arts Avenue”. Along this quiet stretch, residents will find coffee shops, neighborhood taverns, a fish-n-chips restaurant, gourmet restaurants, casual dining options, architect studios and smaller businesses that cater to local residents. There are a few other neighborhood landmarks spread throughout the neighborhood including, Gabby’s Eatery, Mayslack’s, Sentyrz Supermarket, St Mary’s Orthodox Church, one of the first Russian churches in the U.S.
Additional entertainment, dining and shopping can be found south of Sheridan along the Hennepin Avenue commercial corridor. In this trendy area, residents will find several longtime and popular Minneapolis landmarks including, Kramarczuk’s eastern European deli, Surdyk’s Wine Store and Deli, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (the oldest church in Minneapolis) and Nye's Polonaise, named “Best Bar in America” by Esquire Magazine in October of 2006.
Additionally, east of the neighborhood along Central Avenue, residents will find a thriving shopping area featuring Indian grocery stores, Middle Eastern and Latin American restaurants and markets. There are several other entertainment options, nightclubs, casual restaurants, shopping and service-oriented businesses that cater to local residents along the Central Avenue corridor as well.
A new Park is currently being developed in the neighborhood along the Mississippi River close to Broadway Avenue that will provide Sheridan residents with picnic areas, green space and fantastic views of downtown Minneapolis and the Mississippi River.
Boom Island Park, which is just south of Sheridan is a popular 14-acre park located along the banks of the Mississippi River features walking paths, bike paths, picnic areas, boat docks and fantastic views of the Mississippi River and Minneapolis skyline. There is a pedestrian bridge that also connects to nearby Nicollet Island.
The neighborhood is a good mix between home owners and renters, with owner occupied homes making up 42% percent of all households in Sheridan with the remaining 58% of households classified as renters. Average median household income is $35,833 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $37,974.
