The St. Anthony West neighborhood, named after the nearby St. Anthony Falls, is a predominantly residential neighborhood located in close proximity to numerous shopping and entertainment venues as well as downtown Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota and an abundance of green space. This northeast Minneapolis neighborhood is bound by the Mississippi River to the west, Broadway Street to the north, Washington Street and 5th Street to the east and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks to the south.

As the city of Minneapolis’ oldest neighborhood established in 1849, St. Anthony West is diverse and characterized by light industrial buildings in the northwest portion of the neighborhood, parkland and the Mississippi River in the southeastern portion and single-family homes, eastern European churches and multi-family housing throughout the remainder of the neighborhood.

While there is not a central main commercial district within the St. Anthony West neighborhood, there are a few restaurants, and neighborhood taverns scattered throughout including, Elsie’s, Northeast Yacht Club, and Emily’s Lebanese Deli. There are numerous additional shopping, dining and entertainment options a few blocks south of St. Anthony West along the Hennepin Avenue commercial corridor. In this trendy area, residents will find several longtime and popular Minneapolis landmarks including, Kramarczuk’s eastern European deli, Surdyk’s Wine Store and Deli, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (the oldest church in Minneapolis) and Nye's Polonaise, named “Best Bar in America” by Esquire Magazine in October of 2006. Additionally, there are several historic pubs, charming restaurants, boutique shops and a Lunds grocery store within this area as well.

The southwest corner of St. Anthony West is home to Boom Island Park. This popular 14-acre park located along the banks of the Mississippi River features walking paths, bike paths, picnic areas, boat docks and fantastic views of the Mississippi River and Minneapolis skyline. There is a pedestrian bridge that also connects to nearby Nicollet Island.

Nicollet Island, which spans 47 acres, sits in the middle of the Mississippi River and features approximately 43 homes that date from the mid 19th century, De LaSalle High School, and the charming Nicollet Island Inn. The southern portion of the island features Nicollet Island Park, where visitors will find stunning views of the Minneapolis skyline and Mississippi River.

Adjacent to Boom Island Park, is one of the newest parks in the Minneapolis Park System, B.F. Nelson Park. This 12-acre park is currently under development and will eventually become passive green space featuring hiking trails, meadows, prairie, grasslands and observation and viewing areas.

Dickman Park, located in the center of St. Anthony West, is a classic popular neighborhood park that features basketball courts, tennis courts, tetherball, horseshoe pits, picnic areas and a playground and wading pool for the younger residents in the St. Anthony neighborhood.

The neighborhood is a good mix between renters and home owners, with owner occupied homes making up 38% percent of all households in St. Anthony West, with the remaining 62% of households classified as renters.
