The Tangletown neighborhood, formally known as Fuller, derives its name from the unusual street layout and numerous dead end streets in the southern portion of the neighborhood that differ from the traditional city grid layout found in most neighborhoods within Minneapolis. This residential neighborhood located in southwest Minneapolis, is bound by Lyndale Avenue on the west, 46th Street to the north, Interstate 35W to the east and 54th Street and Diamond Lake Road to the south.
Tangletown in itself is fairly diverse. The southern portion of the neighborhood has several winding and steep curved streets with larger homes, while the northern part of the neighborhood is laid out in a traditional grid system, is relatively flat and contains more traditional homes typically found in southwest Minneapolis. The signature landmark of Tangletown is the Washburn Park Water Tower. Although tough to spot due to the curved streets and old growth trees in the neighborhood, this landmark is located on one of the higher points in the neighborhood and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Similar to surrounding neighborhoods, there is a centrally located park, the 2.1 acre Fuller Park which contains a playground, wading pool, open fields and a community recreation center that is available to reserve for birthday parties and family gatherings. Minnehaha Parkway, which traverses the southern portion of Tangletown, follows Minnehaha Creek for 12 miles from Lake Harriet to Minnehaha Park and is popular amongst neighborhood residents for biking, walking and jogging. The parkway is part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway that directly links the Minnehaha neighborhood to miles of paths, trails and parks throughout the city of Minneapolis.
Tangletown is nearly all residential with the exception of Nicollet Avenue, the main street that runs north/south through the neighborhood. Here residents will find numerous dining, retail and other commercial oriented businesses that cater to local residents. Nicollet Avenue also contains an abundance of additional restaurants, entertainment and shopping both north and south of the Tangletown neighborhood. There is also a quiet and charming retail corner just northeast of Fuller Park that contains a bike shop, coffee ship and artist’s galleries.
Tangletown is a diverse neighborhood containing empty nesters, seniors, working professionals and families. Many childfree in the neighborhood attend Ramsey International Fine Arts Center located at 50th Street and Nicollet Avenue, a magnet school for grades K-8 administered by the Minneapolis Public Schools. Sharing part of the same campus is Washburn high school, the 4th largest high school in Minneapolis and one of seven public high schools in the city.
There are some renters in the neighborhood with owner occupied homes making up 75% percent of all households in the Tangletown neighborhood. Average median household income remained slightly higher at $75,124 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $37,974, making Page more affluent than some of the surrounding neighborhoods.
