The Como neighborhood, also known as Southeast Como to differentiate it from the St. Paul neighborhood that shares the same name, is a quiet mostly residential neighborhood located in close proximity to downtown Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota and the trendy commercial areas of northeast Minneapolis. The Como neighborhood, named after Lake Como in northern Italy, is bound by the Burlington Northern Railroad to the south and west, Hennepin Avenue and Winter Street to the north and Highway 280 and the city of St. Paul to the east.

The Como neighborhood contains a mixture of residential, industrial and commercial uses. The eastern and southern sections of the neighborhood are nearly all industrial, while the rest of the neighborhood is primarily residential characterized by early 20th century single-family homes, multi-family apartment buildings and some commercial businesses scattered throughout. Como Avenue, the main thoroughfare that runs through the neighborhood features a few businesses that cater to local residents including, Mudsuckers Coffee House, tanning salon, gas/convenience store, corner market and a pizzeria. There are a few additional businesses that cater to local residents along Hennepin Avenue, the northern border of the neighborhood.

Additional entertainment, dining and shopping can be found in Dinkytown, a vibrant and historical Minneapolis community located adjacent to the University of Minnesota a few blocks south of the Como neighborhood. This eclectic area, popular among college students, features various small businesses tailored to college students, restaurants and cafes, casual dining options, pubs and several multi-family student housing apartment buildings. Notable landmarks in the Dinkytown area include the Varsity Theater, the Dinky Dome, The Loring Pasta Bar (former home of the legendary Bob Dylan), Vescio’s Restaurant and Al’s Breakfast.

Situated in the western portion of the neighborhood is Van Cleve Park. This popular neighborhood park features baseball, soccer and softball fields, public art, basketball courts, tennis courts, gardens and a wading pool and playground for neighborhood children. During the winter months a large ice rink is installed for hockey, broomball and leisurely skating. Como also features six separate community gardens throughout neighborhood that are maintained by resident volunteers and part of urban farming programs involving neighborhood children, many of whom attend Tuttle Elementary School, located in the center of the Como neighborhood along Talmage Avenue.

The neighborhood is located in between two major regional highways, Interstate 35W and Highway 280, providing residents quick and easy access in and out of Como. Additionally, there are a few bus routes that run through the neighborhood taking residents to downtown Minneapolis, a few miles southwest or south into the University of Minnesota.

The neighborhood is a good mix between home owners and renters, with owner occupied homes making up 36% percent of all households in Como with the remaining 64% of households classified as renters. Average median household income is $33,895 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $37,974.
