The University neighborhood, named after the University of Minnesota which completely occupies the neighborhood, is situated on both sides of the Mississippi River, making this neighborhood the only one in Minneapolis that is located on both sides of the Mississippi River. The western portion of the neighborhood, or the West Bank, is bound by 19th Avenue to the west, 1st Street to the north, West River Parkway and the Mississippi River to the east and 4th Street to the south. The eastern portion and the majority of the neighborhood is known as the East Bank and is bound by East River Road and 11th Street to the west, University, 15th and 17th Avenues to the north, Oak Street to the east and East River Road and the Mississippi River to the south.

The vast majority of the neighborhood contains educational and institutional buildings owned by the University of Minnesota, considered to be one of the top public universities in the country.

The northern portion of the East Bank is home to most of the University of Minnesota’s recreational and athletic buildings including Bierman Track & Field Stadium, Siebert Baseball Stadium, Cowles Softball Stadium, Mariucci Arena, Williams Arena, several ancillary practice facilities, and the recently built 50,000-seat TCF Bank Stadium, home of the Golden Gophers football team. The rest of the East Bank features several classroom buildings, University offices, student dormitories, bookstores, auditoriums and cultural attractions such as the iconic Weisman Art Museum, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry.

The West Bank of the neighborhood is geared more towards graduate students and is home to the University of Minnesota Law School, The Carlson School of Management and the Regis Center for Art.

The University neighborhood also features a few commercial and retail businesses and several restaurants and pubs, mainly around the intersection of Washington Avenue and Oak Street, an area that is known as Stadium Village.

One block west of the University neighborhood is Dinkytown, a vibrant and historical Minneapolis community that features various small businesses tailored to college students, restaurants and cafes, casual dining options, pubs and several multi-family student housing apartment buildings. Notable landmarks in the Dinkytown area include the Varsity Theater, the Dinky Dome, The Loring Pasta Bar (former home of the legendary Bob Dylan), Vescio’s Restaurant and Al’s Breakfast.

Because the University neighborhood straddles both sides of the Mississippi River, the primary recreational amenity for University residents are the wide open green spaces and miles of walking and biking paths along the river’s banks. West River Parkway and East River Parkway are both winding and scenic parkways that follow the Mississippi River and are part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway that directly links the University neighborhood to miles of paths, trails and parks throughout the city of Minneapolis.

Mainly due to the high number of college students, the neighborhood contains very few home owners, with owner occupied homes making up just 10% percent of all households in the University neighborhood, with the remaining 90% of households classified as renters. Average median household income is $11,964 per household as compared to an overall household income for Minneapolis of $37,974.
